Oregon Trail Crossroads

Oregan Trail Crossroads official signpost

Oregon Trail Crossroads

You are looking at the official U.S. Government Oregon Trail Crossroads. There is a signpost a tad bit left of center in the picture. It is hard to see but it is there. This signpost is the official government signpost. In various forms, this signpost has been in this spot 1852. It was here that the early settlers who took the Oregon Trail west had to decide if they wanted to go North to Oregon, which ended at Oregon City, or, Head South to the gold country. To most, this was the end of the Oregon Trail because the vast majority of settlers headed South and stayed in California.

The picture also shows the western portion of Wild Horse Acres. Wild Horse Acres extends in excess of a mile from this point west. Generally speaking, Wild Horse Acres extends to the base of the hills where Highway 395 is. There is a small amount of government land in between. However, large part of Wild Horse Acres lies in sight.

This picture was taken in late 1996. It is inaccurate. A new 1999 picture showes the Alturas Transmission Line. You may also notice the telephone lines in the background. These are not power lines. However, it does answer the question "does the property have telephone lines?"
